Drawing on watercolour paper

I try to avoid drawing directly on watercolour paper but when I do, I use a mechanical pencil with a .5 lead. I prefer this type of pencil because it doesn't leave thick, dark lines that can smear into the watercolour paint,  and it always has a sharp point.

I draw very lightly to avoid indenting the paper because colour may settle in any indentations and be darker when the painting is dry. You might try drawing lightly on your paper using watercolour pencils that are the same colour as those you will be using in your painting.
